Don’t go back to the

5. What can we do?

As citizens of Japan, we have experienced the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011. We have a responsibility to realize a safe and peaceful society that does not rely on nuclear power.  It is also very important for all of us to keep an eye on what is happening concerning coal and take responsible action for a sustainable future.

Learn and Express What You Think

The basic direction of Japanese energy policy, including nuclear power plants, is determined by the government.  Currently the government is promoting the use of coal, which seriously affects the environment.  Learning these facts is an important first step.  People need to utilize information provided by NGOs and better understand the issue and governmental policies.  Monitoring the government’s activities is important for the shift to a better future. If you think that the use of coal should not be promoted, don’t keep it to yourself, go to the  “support now” section and tell us!  Also spread the word through Facebook, Twitter, and other networks you may be part of.  The larger our voice is, the stronger the power to change toward sustainable society would be.

●Act

You may encounter people that say “It is unrealistic to use neither coal nor nuclear power.” However, is it realistic for a society 40 years in the future to still rely on nuclear power and coal, which disregards environmental and health considerations? Instead of using large amounts of electricity for decades to come, we can promote energy saving and sustainable energy thereby changing our situation.  In order to let go of old assumptions and create new and better norms, we must take action.

①Reduce the amount of energy you use

To stop relying on nuclear power and coal, reduce the amount of energy you use.  Extreme measures are not necessary.  Simply making smart, effective choices such as conserving energy during peak times (midday during summer) will reduce peak power usage.  Choosing LED lights and energy-saving appliances, and insulation renovation of homes could also make a difference.  Working as a company or a local community will create more innovations and interactions, resulting in larger energy savings.

②Selecting Sustainable Energy

There are ways to choose sustainable energy such as solar panels, solar thermal heaters, and biomass pellet stoves.  Government systems have progressed and it is now easier to introduce sustainable options.  The initial cost may be somewhat expensive but saving on utilities will eventually make up for the initial cost.

③Supporting Sustainable Energy Businesses

New and innovative businesses developing sustainable energy and citizen funded solar power stations are beginning to emerge. Investing a little bit of your savings in a sustainable energy project in the nearby area may be an effective way to support non-coal energy sources.

④Supporting and Getting Involved in Citizen’s Groups such as NGOs

There are NGOs that broadcast the problems of coal and nuclear energy throughout the nation (see our list of supporting organization). Supporting and getting involved with these NGOs and citizen groups will boost the capacity of these organizations.

Let’s work together.  For a brighter, cleaner future.
